A group of students from Merritt College’s new Cybersecurity Program were honored on Friday,January 29, for beating out 125 other colleges and universities across the country to come in second in the 2015 National Cyber League Competition. In the competition, students validate their skills by competing in individual and team games. Merritt President Norma Ambriz-Galaviz and Program Coordinator Anita M. Black presented the group with a giant certificate in appreciation of their success, joined by other college administrators, faculty, and program partners and an audience of fellow students, friends, and family.

Team leader Andy Bittner credits the program’s industry-experienced instructors and fast-paced curriculum with giving them the edge. “Our instructors are from top security companies in Silicon Valley, so we are learning from executives with lots of experience,” he said. “Plus this is an intensive program where we learned enough in just two semesters to give us the knowledge to go to the top in this tough competition.”

Merritt’s fully-accredited Cybersecurity Program started last fall with full classes and has been quickly taking off with students of all ages and backgrounds who want to get into this in-demand field. The two-year program has tracks in applications or infrastructure and each includes a summer internship in a Bay Area security firm where students get hands-on experience. Students can start classes in Spring, Summer, or Fall. (Spring enrollment is open until February 7 by going to www.peralta.edu).
